Teacher - Felting
Description of Services/Program (max 1,024 characters):
After 31 years as a mechanical engineer I retired and happily began felting. My fiber art originated from a felting class with friends when I became intrigued by how wool felts. Of course that led to many more fiber arts classes which ranged from washing sheeps fleece to dyeing and carding wool. Wool has become my specialty. The technique of felting is tangling fibers of wool with a barbed needle or water and agitation. It is one of the oldest crafts predating spinning, weaving and knitting. I use cleaned batts of fiber from different breeds of sheep, goat and alpaca. No patterns or sewing is needed to create the figures; they appear from the wool as unique, one of a kind figures with personalities of their own. I teach methods I've learned and some I've modified to improve the finished item. I use wire armature for bending items or limbs, wrapping batts of wool for quicker felting and finish with a light wet felting for a smooth surface. It's a fun workout playing with wool to create items.
